When Your Child Is Nervous to Try

A new room, new people, and a new activity can feel like a lot. Your child doesn’t have to walk into their first Jiu-Jitsu class feeling confident. That’s something they can build over time.

Keep the first step small

Instead of telling them they need to be brave or good at it, let them know the goal is simply to meet the coaches and try something new. They don’t need to know any moves before they arrive.

Tell us what they’re feeling

If your child is shy, nervous, or unsure, let us know before class. A quick introduction to a coach and a little time to get familiar with the space can help make the first visit feel less overwhelming.

Make the arrival easy

Arrive 10–15 minutes early so you have time to get settled. Bring water and sandals, and have your child wear comfortable workout clothes. If it’s a Gi class, we’ll help fit them for a uniform. Sign the emailed waiver before you arrive.

Notice effort, not perfection

After class, ask what they tried, what they learned, or who helped them. Listening to a coach, trying a new movement, or joining a partner can be a meaningful first step.

Confidence doesn’t always show up as a big smile on day one. Sometimes it starts with being willing to come back and try again.

We’ll help you get started

Our Kids BJJ program welcomes beginners ages 4–15, with coaching that considers age, size, and experience. Have questions about whether it’s a good fit for your child? Reach out before booking.
